Apprenticeship training is a great way to learn job skills while earning money. It combines hands-on learning where experts in a trade (called journeypersons) pass on their knowledge and expertise to employees (called apprentices) right on the job. This practical training is combined with periods of technical training.

How Apprenticeship Works

Apprenticeship is available to persons already working in a trade. Specific details of apprenticeships vary from one trade to another. If you're just out of high school and not employed by a company in the trades, contact us to learn how we can help you!

How To Get Started

1. The Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification website contains all the information you'll need to begin your career in the trades. For your convenience, below are links to downloadable content specific to the tradesmen and women we're looking for at Gregg's:

Plumbers

Electricians

Refrigeration Mechanic

2. The Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology offers regular trade training at their Kelsey Campus, here in Saskatoon. Click here to learn about costs and training dates.

3. If you'd like to explore the trades as a career choice, we'd like to hear from you. Send us an email and tell us about yourself. We'll discuss opportunities to provide training and supervision to you as an apprentice. If you're a successful candidate, The Apprenticeship and Trade Certification office will help you and your employer sign a formal apprenticeship contract. This contract is registered with the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission.

4. Complete the required term of apprenticeship.

5. Attend technical training for the required number of weeks each year in order to receive theory, testing, and hands-on experience, some of which may not be available on the job.

What does it cost to become an apprentice?

Tuition - $30.00 per week (partial or full week equivalent; minimum $120.00). Technical training is an average of 8 weeks per year.

How long is the training program?

Most apprenticeship training takes two to five years to complete, depending on the trade. And remember, you earn a good income while you learn!

Build YOUR Career:

Why go $30,000-$50,000 in debt to Canada Student Loans when you could be earning an equivalent amount or more each year WHILE you apprentice?

While other people your age are working their way through university, you could be earning WHILE you learn!

Ask yourself:

  • How many university students are still living at home with their parents?

  • How many university students earn enough each year to pay the cost of their education and are homeowners at the same time?

  • How many university students are contributing to Registered Retirement Savings each year?

  • How many university students are virtually debt free by the time they complete their education?

You owe it to yourself to explore a career in the trades!
